A wide array of services are offered at Sunderland Animal Hospital including:

We have several signature offerings for current clients and referred clients. The areas of Nutrition Counseling, Physical Therapy and Behavior assistance provide added services for you and your pet.

A board certified veterinary internist and surgeon provide additional support when necessary, to complement the services and expertise of the hospital's regular medical staff.

Video Otoscopy

Ear disease is a common, painful and potentially very debilitating problem in our pets. Until now, the difficulty in properly diagnosing middle ear disease has been quite challenging, and treatment of most ear diseases has been frustrating, with the results mediocre at best.  A comprehensive approach to identifying and managing all predisposing factors, primary causes, and perpetuating features in each case is the key to successful therapy.

In keeping with our mission statement of practicing technologically advanced veterinary medicine, Sunderland Animal Hospital has recently acquired a video otoscope. Traditional hand held otoscopes do not allow veterinarians to view important problems within the pet's ears. The video-otoscope facilitates diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. It improves direct visualization to better assess the condition of the ear canal and the eardrum. It facilitates medical  procedures such as deep cleansing ear flushes and surgical procedures in the ear canal through an operating port in the otoscope head.  It also allows for more precise sample collection for cytology and enhances flushing and debris removal. Photographs and video recordings provide a permanent visual record of the condition of a patient's external canal and tympanum as well as a photograph for the your pet’s scrapbook.

Preventative Care and Wellness

Consistent with our commitment to your pet's health, we offer both a 6-month or 12-month wellness program for all of our patients.  We recommend twice-yearly physical examinations to detect significant health issues which can occur in a short period of time, such as cancer, diabetes, arthritis, heart disease and metabolic disease.  Our goal is to detect, treat, and potentially even prevent health problems before they become life-threatening.  We also offer blood screens that can detect any abnormalities in blood health or organ function before your pet starts showing signs of illness.

Dentistry

Periodontal disease is one of the most common medical problems afflicting pets.  Pets experiencing bad breath, or having difficulty chewing food likely have advanced periodontal disease.  Other signs of dental disease include a build-up of yellow or brown tartar along the gum line, and inflamed or receding gums.  In a routine dental cleaning, your pet's teeth are first evaluated. The teeth are then scaled and polished and a fluoride treatment is applied.  A barrier sealant is also applied to help prolong the effects of the cleaning.

Nutrition Counseling

Whether you have concerns regarding your pets’ weight, a specific medical issue or to confirm your aging pet is receiving the best diet possible, our nutrition program can provide the information you are looking for.  During a nutrition consultation with one of our trained technicians we review your specific needs.  The technician then provides a specific and individualized treatment plan with necessary follow-up to attain those goals.

Physical Rehabilitation

The other unique service available at Sunderland Animal Hospital is our Physical Therapy program. This is the only PT service for animals in the region coordinated by a licensed physical therapist.

Physical Therapy is well known to speed the healing process and return function to humans and animals following an injury or surgical procedure.  Initially, patients are individually evaluated and treated at the clinic by the therapist. Subsequently, an individualized home program unique to the pet and circumstances is formulated. Family members are instructed by the therapist, so they may assist in the healing process of their pet.

Behavior Consultations

Behavior related issues are common problems with pets. We offer consultation services to fully address issues and follow through with individualized treatment.
